Process Development Engineer
High Wycombe
Salary to £25k negotiable
Purpose
To act as a conduit between Engineering and Process, Technical and Product development.
Permanent
£20000 to £25000 per annum
To employ engineering principles and developments to optimise manufacturing efficiency through improvements in process control, equipment design and operating practices.
Context
The role is key to the implementation and delivery of growth and cost release targets through new process development initiatives and existing process efficiency improvements.
Dimensions
Providing technical support for projects with capital expenditure of £2 to £3m.
Advise on the technical performance and make recommendations in support of process equipment capital expenditure to £250k.
Reporting to Process Engineering & Automation Manager.
Key Outputs
To ensure rigorous approach is maintained in process development activities through:
I. The early investigation of IPR constraints on process options.
II. The appropriate consideration of process economics and financial feasibility.
III. Well planned and documented experimental programmes to facilitate subsequent patent protection of innovations.
To provide specialist support to Operations through the commissioning, operation and modification of process plant and training of factory staff in safe and efficient work procedures.
To identify and implement necessary safety features and procedures for process plant to meet legislation and Company Safety Policy.
To identify process engineering and innovation opportunities for Group Technical, recommending change/improvement as required.
To be aware of product development activity reporting process development requirements to senior department managers.
To provide process engineering support to product development where requirement falls within process engineering.
To ensure all activity is prioritised across the full business portfolio.
Decision-making Authority
To identify business case, project objectives and to plan, self start and lead project work in the following areas:
Process engineering design & plant commissioning.
Process plant analysis and optimisation.
Process scale-up, feasibility studies and manufacturing trials.
To define and agree criteria for hand over of project results with peers/managers in project teams to ensure successful implementation.
The ability to identify and recommend equipment requirements for new manufacturing processes from food machinery suppliers and from other industries for major capital and revenue purchases.
Qualifications
University or similar qualification Essential
Breadth of experience:
Relevant experience in the food process industries with hands-on experience of food process unit operations at pilot and full scale.
Experience gained through sustained project work manufacturing sites is required.
Command of financial measures used to characterise profitability/sales of new and existing products and hurdles used by business for justification of investments.
Sound understanding of KPIs used to characterise manufacturing performance.
Basic rules for application and grant of patents.
Full awareness of roles and organisational structure of Group Technical and Operations needed to maximise cross-functional contribution to projects.
Sound grasp of business processes used to deliver growth and cost release targets and to procure capital for new assets.
Full appreciation of Group Technical Strategy and how role contributes to this framework.
Good understanding of the physical properties of food.

Techncial Manager - Buckinghamshire - £350 per day (3 days per week)
This position is cover longterm sickness intially.

Executive Summary
Develop and maintain Quality Assurance procedures and standards that ensure the safe manufacture of finished products complying with relevant legal standards and customer requirements on a day-to-day basis.
To be the main contact from major retailers and third party auditors with responsibility for specifications, traceability, complaints management and implementation of relevant preventative measures.
Key Accountabilities:
Management representative for our clients Quality Management system, managing and developing systems to ensure ongoing compliance with BRC and customer standards. Includes responsibility for document issue / control and managing third party audits.
Promote and develop a proactive culture to Health & Safety within the Q.A. team that delivers site safety objectives and complies with Health & Safety policy. For a full list of accountabilities see Appendix A.
To manage auditing programmes to ensure raw materials, packaging materials and finished products meet agreed specifications.
To monitor quality failures and implement measures to minimise the production of out of specification product.
To monitor and advise the site regarding food hygiene and product safety standards.
To develop, maintain and review the site HACCP system
Provide comprehensive technical support for both internal departments and external customers.
To manage COSHH assessments and maintain records.
Support manufacturing departments in areas where process improvements are required.
Co-ordinate the issue, approval and updating of customer specifications.
Keep fully updated with all legislative and industry issues which provide a threat or opportunity to the site and make appropriate recommendations for action.
Knowledge & Experience
1. Qualification in relevant discipline with at least 2 years post graduate relevant experience, or
2. Broad experience of working to major retailer standards PIU/BRC.
3. Excellent interaction and presentation skills.
4. Previous experience of responsibility for a successful technical department.
