– Establishing a Design & Build Centre of Excellence – there is considerable interest and demand from the wider groups to provide specialist expertise and capability.
Reporting to the Technical Manager, this individual will be a key member of a 25-strong Engineering Team providing guidance and direction for all Hydraulic Systems Design and Engineering activity – currently running at around £1m per annum. Very much a hands-on role and leading from the front, this is an exceptional opportunity to work at a strategic and tactical level – influencing and determining overall direction as well as making it happen on the workshop floor.

– Advising Senior Management and Engineering teams on development trends in the wider hydraulics industry and technical arenas.
– Co-ordinating all hydraulic development and innovation activity.
– Supporting, coaching and mentoring hydraulic and non-hydraulic mechanical designers across the business.
– Providing advice and guidance to site operations and workshop teams during production.
– Visiting working systems in the field to assess performance and optimise operational efficiency.
– Reducing operational down-time - minimising build & operating costs.
– Acting as a high-level trouble-shooter / client interface when dealing with complex design / operational challenges / issues.
– Specifying and rationalising system componentry.
– Maintaining all documentation in accordance with Quality Processes.
Candidate Profile
• Hands-on, practical and team oriented, will have a successful track record of designing and developing hydraulic and electro-hydraulic systems using proprietary and bespoke components – ideally for marine, mobile, agricultural, quarrying or tunnelling applications.
• Degree or HND qualified in a relevant engineering discipline – likely to have a background in project / applications engineering in an OEM, hydraulic equipment supplier or engineering consultancy.
• Will have the vision and energy to drive design & engineering excellence at a strategic level combined with the personal qualities and leadership skills to make it happen on the shop-floor.
• Well organised, collaborative and a strong communicator, must be able to operate at all levels – coaching, influencing and negotiating to promote design & engineering excellence whilst achieving practical outcomes.
• Flexible and adaptable, must be willing to roll their sleeves up and get stuck into technical issues when required – familiar with the pressures of tight timescales and deadlines – must be capable of managing resources to deliver projects to time, quality and cost parameters.
• Formal Project Management experience would be a distinct advantage.
• Commercially minded, must be able to contribute to wider business decision making – including supporting bid-management teams in submission positioning and preparation.
