Supply Chain Engineer

Our Client is a well established global Engineering company employing around 3,500 staff over 9 countries. They manufacture a variety of interconnection solutions for harsh environments and aim to be the supplier of choice in their chosen markets, which range from Defence, Civil Aerospace, Autosport to Recreational vehicles. Reporting to the Purchasing Manager you will be responsible for providing technical support to the Purchasing Department.
Key Responsibilities:
• Provide technical support to Suppliers in trouble shooting production problems.
• Purchase supplies of materials, components, and services to the appropriate quality standards and at the lowest cost.
• Initiate method improvement and cost saving projects with Production and Suppliers.
• Support Production/Sales Engineering in the preparation of Process Specifications and Routings.
• Assist and provide concise information to our suppliers for manufacturing purposes.
• Obtain written quotations for the purchase of raw materials, components and services.
• Be responsible for the preparation and authorisation of purchase orders.
• Liaise with Engineering and Production Engineering to ensure components are designed for manufacture.
• Be participative in the Vendor Management improvement program.
• Obtaining an in depth knowledge of defined Key Suppliers and their products and services.
• Being aware of potential problems in suppliers services and to be able to take remedial action when required.
• Preparing specific development plans and introducing Lean techniques with the Supplier.
• Carry out formal technical audits of suppliers as and when required.
• Observe Health and Safety regulations in line with company procedure and Government legislation.
Essential Job Skills:
• Must hold an ONC/HNC in Mechanical or Production Engineering.
• At least 3 years experience in a production environment or a related industry.
• The ability to work under your own initiative to trouble shoot problems with Suppliers as they arise.
• The ability to make key business decisions and recommendations.
• The ability to communicate internally and with suppliers at all levels.
• Membership of CIPS is desirable although not essential.
• Machine and Plating shop bias preferred, but not essential.

The Buyer/Senior Buyer will report initially to the Supply Chain Manager, then to the Production Manager and be responsible for identifying material requirements and initiating action to procure & monitor progress. The majority of items to be procured will be high value, low volume, along with other consumables but the post will also be required to procure other items including tools and protective clothing required by the workshop.
PRIMARY TASKS
• Identify from the Bills of Material and the Production Schedule the consumables and other low value materials required by the conversion process. Requirements may also be generated by Purchase Orders initiated by the Workshop Information System.
• Identify and collate other requirements for procurement required by the Workshop, including protective equipment and tools.
• Arrange and monitor service contracts required by the Workshop, these may include hire or lease of vehicles and supply and cleaning of overalls for staff.
• Obtain quotations from local companies for the supply of these materials and working with the Procurement Team to select suitable suppliers.
• Undertake procurement action in accordance with Company procedures.
• Assist the Supply Chain Manager to establish a procurement system and help write the required processes and procedures.
• Monitor supplier performance and undertake visits to suppliers where necessary to ensure the requirements of quality, specification and delivery are met.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
• Experience of purchasing technical or similar items. i.e.- fasteners, components, fuel tanks, cabling etc
• Experience in either rail, aerospace, automotive or other relevant industry.
• Knowledge of contract law and the ability to monitor supplier performance and obtain best value for money.
• Self-motivated and able to work both independently and as part of a team.
• IT literate.
• Experience of BAAN MRP/ERP systems.
