Overview:
The Purchasing Manager is a critical appointment to help us achieve our ambitious profit and growth targets. Record food price inflation reinforces the need to recruit an outstanding procurement professional. As a key member of the Company Senior Management Team the successful candidate will report to the Manufacturing Director, and will be responsible for ensuring cost effective sourcing, negotiation, procurement and supply of materials. Working with a dedicated buying team, the Head of Purchasing will be able to lead and develop the team. This role is accountable for an annual UK budget of around £20 million and will play an instrumental role on the International Group Buying Committee. The Committee is responsible for over £60 million of shared buying between our German, Dutch and UK business's.
This is a stimulating and exciting role. We buy from varied and diverse worldwide markets including cooked meat, raw meat, dairy, packaging, oils, vegetables and fish. The role requires a proven Purchasing Manager with the intellectual capacity, knowledge and experience of modern buying techniques. It will be essential to develop category strategies within the current market. They will also have strong negotiation skills, combined with assertiveness: they will also be confident, assured and willing to present their ideas both verbally and through written reports. The ability to influence will be critical. This role requires an organised and determined individual who can see a broader commercial view and understand how to gain effective results. The Purchasing Manager duties will involve some European travel and, at times, world travel.

" The ability to reliably and rationally forecast future Raw Material Prices is a crucial part of this role. Whilst this is not always easy or possible, the ability to propose credible future raw material prices allows us to develop accurate pricing strategies and thus secure profit and growth.
" Many of our Raw Materials are bought from outside the UK and it is essential that the successful candidate has good knowledge of currency influences, trading quotas and tariffs in all the countries in which we operate.

The role of senior buyer is a newly created role which demonstrates our recognition that purchasing is a key function in delivering business strategy. The successful candidate with report to the purchasing manager and will be a key and influential member of the purchasing team.
Working within a team of 7 the successful candidate will be based at our production facility in Wiltshire. The structure for purchasing is category team split – proteins, ingredients & packaging/traded goods - this role will lead one of 3 categories. This category lead role has a direct report which will be at development level so there will be a high degree of coaching, developing & management required.
The role of senior buyer will be expected to really make a difference in the category of responsibility by challenging what we currently do and also bringing experiences from other industries & roles historically held. One of the biggest challenges the successful candidate will have is to be able to balance the day to day production stresses and strains with the need to think about the bigger picture. They will be able to manage their time & that of their direct report effectively to achieve these dual requirements.

With the pressures we face as a food manufacturer from rising/volatile food prices and commodity prices the focus is on the purchasing team to come up with ways to accurately predict these costs, control these costs and be able to challenge what we do today to take cost out.
Forecasting and predicting where we have risks to budget form a key part of this role. The protein category is high value & all subcategories within it are Global markets so gaining the expertise to understand the market drivers is critical to ensure we can predict & communicate in timely manner the risks to budget to the wider business.
Ensuring we are working with the right suppliers is key for our service levels to the factory. We measure the performance of our suppliers from an OTIF perspective and from a quality perspective and work in a proactive cross functional way to ensure that we are working with the right suppliers.
The nature of our business means we have a real focus on understanding where our customer complaints come from & then tackling the causes – with the protein category the biggest areas of focus are on foreign body complaints & tough meat. It is critical that we are buying from the right suppliers & that these suppliers understand our requirements & work with us to achieve the results we require.
The candidate will work closely with the Group lead buyer for Chicken, Pork & beef based in Germany. The role will be critical in supporting and implementing group strategy in those areas into the UK. Communication is key in this area.
